The 5-ingredient test: read any label like a pro

The short answer: Look at the first five ingredients of any snack. Can you name them? Are they real foods? Is the sweetener clear? If yes, it's a good sign for a clean label snack in India. If not, put it back.

The 5-ingredient test is a quick way to check whether a snack respects nourishment: real ingredients, clearly named.

You don't need a food-science degree to shop well. You need five questions and about a minute. Here's the test we use on everything, including ourselves.

Question 1: Can I name them?

Read the first five ingredients aloud. If each one is something you'd find in a kitchen, it passes. If one sounds like a lab experiment, ask why it's there.

Question 2: Is there a percentage?

Transparent brands print how much of each key ingredient is in the product. It's a quiet mark of confidence. Ours does: 24.1% dates, 30.4% ragi flour, 41.7% sesame, 35.76% pistachio, and so on.

Question 3: What's the sweetener?

It should be named. Ours is jaggery and dates, sweetened by dates and jaggery.

CONTAINS NATURALLY OCCURRING SUGARS FROM JAGGERY. NOT A LOW-CALORIE FOOD. Nutritional profile tested by a well-known NABL-accredited, FSSAI-approved lab.

Question 4: What's the fat?

Ghee, coconut oil, nuts: all nameable. Beware of vague "edible oils" with no detail.

Question 5: What keeps it fresh?

Ours: natural antioxidants like rosemary extract, mixed tocopherols and natural clove extract, and no artificial preservatives. A good label tells you.

Bonus: the nutritional information table

Read it with the serving size in mind. Ours is lab-tested, and the serving is one 15 g ladoo.

Try it on us

Open any product page and read the ingredients. If we don't pass, tell us. We'd like to know.

Why does this matter?

Because informed shoppers get better products. When enough of us read the label, brands are pushed to make better labels.
