Nostalgia is the new luxury: why nani's recipes are trending

The short answer: Nani's recipes are trending because they're the opposite of rushed. Traditional Indian recipes bring memory, patience and flavour that no shortcut can fake. That's the soul of The Ladoo Katha: my mother's kitchen, made for you.

Nostalgia is nourishment for the soul: recipes made slowly, handed down and rolled by hand.

Have you noticed how many people now describe their favourite restaurant as "just like my nani's cooking"? Or how many brands are quietly bringing back grandmother recipes? It isn't a coincidence.

Why now?

Because everything else is fast. Delivery in ten minutes, messages in seconds, content in a flick. People are craving something that feels slow, warm and personal. A recipe that took three generations to refine is the opposite of a trend, and that's its appeal.

What are traditional recipes made of?

Dates, millets, seeds, cocoa, nuts, jaggery, ghee. Honest things, used patiently. They aren't glamorous, but they have a depth that glossier ingredients rarely match.

Our story

It began with my mummy, who always knew I had a sweet tooth. She didn't want my cravings filled with sugary junk, so she began making ladoos at home with dates, millets, seeds, cocoa, nuts and many other thoughtfully chosen ingredients. It was never meant to become a business; just a mother's quiet way of caring for her daughter through good food.

How do we honour that today?

By making every ladoo by hand, in small batches, never rushed. By keeping the recipes rooted and experimenting with ingredients, proportions and roasting. By printing every ingredient on the label.

Why is this a "luxury"?

Because time is the scarcest ingredient. A recipe made slowly, with attention, and passed on with care is the closest thing to luxury that most of us will ever taste.

Good to know

Our ladoos contain nuts or seeds and, in five of six, ghee. They're sweetened by dates and jaggery and aren't low-calorie foods.
